Regal in appearance, peacocks are some of the most beautiful birds in the world. When they spread their train into a dazzling fan, they are even more spectacular. Thus, the expression “proud as a peacock” is used to describe a vain or self-centered person.
Why does a peacock put on such a fabulous, showy display of its brilliantly-colored, metallic feathers? To impress its female (peahen) counterpart, of course 🙂 . And wouldn’t you know, she tends to select as a mate the peacock with the most impressive display 🙂 !
In ancient times, travelers brought these birds from their native home of India to display them as ornamental in elaborate gardens in other lands. Live peacocks adorned the gardens of ancient Greece, Rome, and India. The Bible indicates that peacocks were among King Solomon’s valuable imports. (1 Kings 10:22 & 23) Understandably, they are highly prized for their beauty.
